It is a puzzling start. The Packers had quarterback, wide receiver and other spots to solve and reached instead for Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE, at No. 69.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Every board in the league had Smith lower, and that gap is the story.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.29 · Pick 29 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 30
A straight-up fair deal on Quinyon Mitchell at the 29th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 39
Tyler Guyton in Round 2, Pick 4 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 34
Kamren Kinchens at the 38th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 58
A premium they did not need to pay, Edgerrin Cooper a notch or two before his time. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 72
A reach for Trey Benson in No. 55; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 87
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves quarterback, wide receiver and other spots untouched.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Cade Stover · TE-EDGE · rank 94
A surprising call. With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent pick 89 on Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE they were not short of.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Max Melton · CB · rank 111
They paid sticker price for Max Melton in slot 106, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 121
The board had cheaper options than Darius Robinson at the Round 4 slot, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.6 · Pick 142 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 139
A reasonable price with a little left over, Malik Mustapha in slot 142. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · Javion Cohen · OG · rank 149
They took Javion Cohen at par in the 144th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
