Green Bay Packers

Nobody dealt better than the Packers this weekend: B.

Future B-

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot is 49 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The bottom line is a respectable B.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.6 · Pick 38 · Bralen Trice · DE-EDGE · rank 37
Bralen Trice at the 38th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 40
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Guyton at Round 2, Pick 7, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 58
They liked Edgerrin Cooper enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 50. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 66
They paid sticker price for Javon Bullard in slot 59, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.29 · Pick 61 · Caelen Carson · CB · rank 67
By-the-book stuff, Caelen Carson at the 61st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 72
They went early on Trey Benson in No. 62, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 75
Johnny Wilson in pick 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.10 · Pick 74 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 87
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots untouched.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Cade Stover · TE-EDGE · rank 94
Of all the spots to shop, they chose TE-EDGE. Cade Stover in No. 88 leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots for later.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 95
Zak Zinter at slot 99 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 155
A wild overpay on Braelon Allen in pick No. 106, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
