Start where it matters. The Vikings took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
Hopper falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Reaching for McCarthy left real value on the table behind him.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a franchise quarterback, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Circle this one: Trey Benson at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Maason Smith at No. 108 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for Jarrian Jones in Round 4, Pick 29, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Luke McCaffrey in the 157th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on Layden Robinson in the 167th pick, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had cheaper options than Justin Rogers at pick No. 177, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
Ty'Ron Hopper at slot 230 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They liked Josh Proctor enough to skip the value, taking him in the 232nd pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
