The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 89th overall pick on Brenden Rice a full 32 spots early. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off.
However the rest shakes out, Davis at that price is a win they earned. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Fair-plus on Tyler Guyton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Roman Wilson at par in the 43rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and Tyler Nubin was the payoff at slot 51. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kiran Amegadjie in the 68th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached a country mile for Brenden Rice at No. 89, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ben Sinnott at the 101st pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Caelen Carson at pick 103 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No drama and no debate, Will Shipley went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 10. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jalyx Hunt. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value with a capital V on Jarrian Jones in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Hunter Nourzad at pick No. 143 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cornelius Johnson in No. 161 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Fabien Lovett in the 180th overall pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jordan Magee at No. 193 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor itch, scratched.
Steal is underselling it; Isaiah Davis at Round 6, Pick 19 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into Logan Lee at pick No. 214, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Carson Steele at slot 249 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
