The search is over. The Vikings handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
That Washington pick is the receipt they will wave around later. McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a passer to set the clock by, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zak Zinter. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They read the board right and Josh Newton was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Nelson Ceaser at the 157th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nothing to complain about; Tykee Smith went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Daijun Edwards in pick 181 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Somehow Tahj Washington was still sitting there in No. 232, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
