The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Matthew Jones, taking him 53 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Jenkins at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
Fair-plus on Edgerrin Cooper, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kris Jenkins in the 58th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Austin Booker at slot 83 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Cole Bishop in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They took Zak Zinter at par in pick 99, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Josh Newton in pick 126 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Kitan Oladapo went about where he belonged in the 154th overall pick. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Hunter Nourzad. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Malik Mustapha in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Myles Cole at pick No. 196 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at No. 202 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Matthew Jones at slot 219 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
Kimani Vidal in the 245th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jordan Whittington in the 255th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
