The rest of the league had time to spare on Trajan Jeffcoat; the Packers did not wait, grabbing him 89 spots ahead at the 219th overall pick. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They banked enough surplus on Gore Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 28 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value.
Cooper DeJean at pick 44 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A slide stopped in pick No. 64, with T.J. Tampa worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cole Bishop at the 88th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A big swing on Cedric Gray at the Round 3 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Blake Fisher is a better player than slot 129 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A quiet steal in No. 132: Elijah Jones for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Nelson Ceaser at the 134th pick, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Christian Jones in pick No. 157 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Luke McCaffrey still on the board at slot 176. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy bit of business in pick 177, where Walter Rouse graded well above the range. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Delmar Glaze at the 202nd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jase McClellan at Round 6, Pick 40 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Julian Pearl slipping to the Round 6 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
A wild overpay on Trajan Jeffcoat in pick 219, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked Darius Muasau enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 7, Pick 25. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Frank Gore Jr. in the 255th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
