The Packers went off the board in a big way for Trajan Jeffcoat, 132 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Landing Mustapha that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The Colson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and tight end. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptive interior force at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 32 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at slot 45 squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Nice patience on T.J. Tampa, who had no business lasting to the 60th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A surprising call. With quarterback and tight end still to address, they spent pick 64 on Junior Colson, a linebacker they were not short of.
Cole Bishop in Round 3, Pick 10 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Dominick Puni in pick 79 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Steal is underselling it; Will Shipley at the Round 4 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Elijah Jones at Round 4, Pick 32 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Blake Fisher at pick No. 134 is the proof. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Johnny Wilson at the 143rd pick for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
James Williams in the 150th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They talked themselves into Solomon Byrd at No. 157, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Trajan Jeffcoat in slot 176 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
You do not let a safety like Kitan Oladapo reach No. 177 and blink. They did not. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Circle this one: Malik Mustapha at the 202nd overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Taking M.J. Devonshire in pick No. 215 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for Jaden Crumedy in the 218th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 219 is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy bit of business in pick 245, where Edefuan Ulofoshio graded well above the range. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Jalen Sundell slid further than he should have, and Round 7, Pick 35 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
