There is reaching, and then there is Trajan Jeffcoat at pick 202. The Packers jumped the board by 106 and dared it to prove them wrong.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They banked enough surplus on McConkey to cover a lot of smaller sins. It is not that Bishop is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter.
A slide stopped in the 36th pick, with Cooper DeJean worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Edgerrin Cooper at slot 50 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They let Tyler Nubin come to them and pounced at pick 53. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Nice patience on T.J. Tampa, who had no business lasting to pick No. 60. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Cole Bishop in the 62nd overall pick leaves tight end for later.
You do not let a wide receiver like Ladd McConkey reach the 65th pick and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Michael Hall Jr. at slot 78 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Trey Benson at Round 3, Pick 28 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Dominick Puni. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Caelen Carson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Blake Fisher slid further than he should have, and pick 126 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A curious use of pick No. 128. Tight end needed the pick; a linebacker in James Williams did not.
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end to take Tommy Eichenberg, a linebacker that was not the priority.
A straight-up fair deal on Michael Pratt at slot 142, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Johnny Wilson still on the board at pick No. 148. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Beau Brade was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier safety value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Logan Lee in the 164th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached a country mile for Jaden Crumedy at No. 169, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Luke McCaffrey at pick 173 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Walter Rouse at the 176th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trajan Jeffcoat in Round 6, Pick 27, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Frank Gore Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in the 219th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on Nathan Thomas in pick No. 245, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Trevin Wallace in Round 7, Pick 35 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
