There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Nelson Ceaser a full 41 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They banked enough surplus on Amegadjie to cover a lot of smaller sins. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
Value with a capital V on Troy Fautanu in the 39th pick, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Graham Barton in slot 41 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
Edgerrin Cooper at the 60th overall pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 3 slot, where T.J. Tampa graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Michael Hall Jr. at pick 71 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Max Melton at Round 3, Pick 15 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kiran Amegadjie in slot 88 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cole Bishop at pick 91 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Will Shipley in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
McKinnley Jackson at the 101st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Nelson Ceaser. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Johnny Wilson was the payoff at pick No. 140. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
