The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 57 spots for Logan Lee, and value like that does not grow back.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. That Wilson pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 28 they get protection for the quarterback at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Cooper DeJean is a better player than Round 2, Pick 7 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in the 46th pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jonathon Brooks at No. 60 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A curious use of pick 62. Edge rusher, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Payton Wilson did not.
A tidy little value on Max Melton in the 79th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Dominick Puni in the 80th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They talked themselves into Mekhi Wingo at the 88th pick, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A quiet steal in pick 89: Mike Sainristil for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Caelen Carson at slot 92 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in No. 93, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Cole Bishop at pick No. 96 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They took Christian Mahogany at par in Round 3, Pick 37, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Blake Fisher at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A slide stopped in Round 5, Pick 4, with Johnny Wilson worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nice patience on Beau Brade, who had no business lasting to slot 149. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Nothing to complain about; Tommy Eichenberg went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Logan Lee in pick 153 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on Jaden Crumedy in the 214th overall pick, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
