The Packers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Xavier Thomas at the Round 3 slot regardless, 63 picks early. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
Greenfield falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Circle this one: Cooper DeJean at slot 52 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They did well to land Edgerrin Cooper in the 54th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 30, with T.J. Tampa worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Max Melton in No. 83 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cole Bishop well ahead of where he belonged. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They reached a country mile for Matt Goncalves at pick No. 88, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Xavier Thomas. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; MarShawn Lloyd at No. 120 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Josh Newton at pick 136 is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Sataoa Laumea at Round 5, Pick 18 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
James Williams in the 155th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They barely believed it either: Jamari Thrash still on the board at the Round 5 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Mason McCormick at the 169th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Dillon Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Justin Rogers at the Round 6 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
The board had M.J. Devonshire higher than the 202nd overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
You do not let a wide receiver like Jha'Quan Jackson reach Round 6, Pick 32 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Trente Jones all the way to pick 219, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 245 is the definition of value, full stop. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Garret Greenfield in the 255th pick, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
