The Packers did not so much draft Nathaniel Watson as overpay for him, 32 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. Getting Newton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
T'Vondre Sweat at the 43rd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Payton Wilson at pick No. 59, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A tidy little value on Kiran Amegadjie in pick 69, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A conviction pick on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at No. 74 that the board grades a round light. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent Round 3, Pick 23 on Cole Bishop, a safety they were not short of.
They paid sticker price for Will Shipley in the 100th overall pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Somehow Josh Newton was still sitting there in slot 140, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nathaniel Watson in No. 181 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Value with a capital V on KT Leveston in pick 255, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
