Boards are made to be trusted, and the Packers shredded theirs for Jase McClellan. He came off 30 spots early, and the room will hear about it. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Packers indulged a want in Williams while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. Newton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 28 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in slot 43. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Ruke Orhorhoro in Round 2, Pick 28 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Mike Sainristil at No. 65 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Cole Bishop at the 79th pick, and the board is aghast. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Zak Zinter at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 28 on James Williams with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Josh Newton slid further than he should have, and No. 130 is lovely value for the cornerback. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Luke McCaffrey in the 142nd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jase McClellan at pick 166 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
