It is a puzzling start. The Packers had quarterback, tight end and other spots to solve and reached instead for Malik Mustapha, a safety, at No. 119. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
If Wilson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 26th pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 44 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Marshawn Kneeland at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at the 84th pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cole Bishop in No. 86 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at slot 92 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Johnny Wilson in Round 4, Pick 1 says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Will Shipley at pick 109 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Malik Mustapha at safety with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
A curious use of No. 123. Quarterback, tight end and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Cedric Gray did not.
