Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
However the rest shakes out, Hardy at that price is a win they earned. The McCarthy reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 14 they get their quarterback of the future, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Tyler Guyton at pick No. 34 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A quiet steal in No. 45: Keon Coleman for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Bralen Trice went about where he belonged in the 68th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Zak Zinter in slot 104 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Theo Johnson at par in Round 4, Pick 36, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Elijah Jones at the 182nd pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Daequan Hardy in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
