The trade table was a mismatch, and the Patriots were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Royals. The cost of the Trapilo reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The Caelen Carson pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Grey Zabel in Round 2, Pick 6 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Tre Harris in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Alfred Collins slipping to No. 69 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A slide stopped in pick 76, with Jalen Royals worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, Ozzy Trapilo a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cam Skattebo at slot 105 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It fills a real need, too.
