The board owed the Texans one, and it paid up: Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 117 name on the board, sitting there at No. 241 like a gift left on the doorstep.
Every board in the league had Thornton Jr. lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
So much rides on Tyler Booker that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get protection for the quarterback, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
They reached into another round for Dont'e Thornton Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Vernon Broughton in Round 3, Pick 25, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
TreVeyon Henderson in the 126th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Chris Paul Jr. in the 165th pick, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: Ryan Fitzgerald at slot 241 is a fall that decides a draft. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
