The rest of the league had time to spare on Phillip Webb; the Texans did not wait, grabbing him 131 spots ahead at pick No. 171.
They banked enough surplus on Fitzgerald to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 30 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him.
They took Alfred Collins at par in No. 58, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tez Johnson at the 89th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: TreVeyon Henderson at the 108th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Jake Majors at slot 127 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Cody Simon at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for Phillip Webb, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Ryan Fitzgerald all the way to pick 175, and they scooped it up. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jaishawn Barham in slot 243, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
