You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with LaJohntay Wester in No. 89.
On value alone, Fitzgerald makes the weekend a net positive. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Tyler Booker reach the 58th pick and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: LaJohntay Wester in pick 89, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Vernon Broughton well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Devin Neal at pick No. 167 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier specialist at a bargain, Ryan Fitzgerald in slot 243, plain and simple. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
