Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Smael Mondon Jr., the No. 111 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 7 slot. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The cost of the Broughton reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a disruptive interior force, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 58 with a little surplus value in Isaiah Bond. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dylan Fairchild in Round 3, Pick 25 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Vernon Broughton at No. 127 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Circle this one: Devin Neal at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; Smael Mondon Jr. at the 243rd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
