Nobody had Dont'e Thornton Jr. this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 85 spots to get him at the 89th overall pick.
The Jackson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get an anchor for the defensive front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A reach on Tate Ratledge in pick 58; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dont'e Thornton Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Kevin Winston Jr. in the 127th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nazir Stackhouse at the 167th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ja'Quinden Jackson in pick No. 243, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
