The Texans did not so much draft Nicholas Singleton as overpay for him, 32 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Bentley at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 29 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Anthony Hill Jr. went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Caleb Banks slid further than he should have, and pick No. 59 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Nicholas Singleton at the 69th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
J.C. Davis in pick 125 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Seth McGowan. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Domani Jackson at par in pick No. 167, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jeff Caldwell at Round 6, Pick 20 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Dallen Bentley at the 210th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Isaiah Nwokobia slipping to No. 236 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They did well to land Trey Zuhn III in the 243rd pick, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
