Houston Texans

The Texans checked most of the boxes and earned a B.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Texans reached some 29 spots for J.C. Davis, and value like that does not grow back. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Washington Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Sonny Styles · LB · rank 21
Sonny Styles slid further than he should have, and the 31st overall pick is lovely value for the linebacker. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Emmanuel Pregnon · OG · rank 39
They paid sticker price for Emmanuel Pregnon in slot 38, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 55
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in Jake Slaughter. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Christen Miller · DL · rank 56
Value with a capital V on Christen Miller in No. 69, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Mike Washington Jr. · RB · rank 74
Taking Mike Washington Jr. in Round 3, Pick 31 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · J.C. Davis · OT · rank 138
A real head-scratcher, J.C. Davis in the 109th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.1 · Pick 141 · Kaytron Allen · RB · rank 146
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kaytron Allen. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.27 · Pick 167 · Eric Rivers · WR · rank 167
Eric Rivers at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Ar'maj Reed-Adams · OG · rank 169
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at pick No. 171 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.27 · Pick 243 · Andre Fuller · CB · rank 226
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Andre Fuller in pick 243. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
