The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Texans watched Thaddeus Dixon slide 27 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. If McGowan pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.29 · Pick 29 · Peter Woods · DT · rank 30
They paid sticker price for Peter Woods in the 29th overall pick, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · CJ Allen · LB · rank 32
Quietly one of the better values of the day, CJ Allen at pick No. 41. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 58
Jake Slaughter at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Christen Miller · DL · rank 59
Christen Miller slipping to slot 69 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 113
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nicholas Singleton. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Jalen Farmer · OG · rank 109
No edge and no loss on Jalen Farmer in pick 108; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.1 · Pick 141 · Dametrious Crownover · OT · rank 146
By-the-book stuff, Dametrious Crownover at No. 141 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.27 · Pick 167 · Seth McGowan · RB · rank 188
Seth McGowan at the 167th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.5 · Pick 221 · Jadon Canady · CB · rank 222
They took Jadon Canady at par in the 221st pick, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
R7.27 · Pick 243 · Zavion Thomas · WR · rank 235
Value with a capital V on Zavion Thomas in the Round 7 slot, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.40 · Pick 256 · Thaddeus Dixon · CB · rank 229
Circle this one: Thaddeus Dixon at No. 256 is a fall that decides a draft. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
