You build a draft on nights like this. Germie Bernard had no business being available in the Round 5 slot, and the Texans did the only sane thing and turned in the card. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it. Their trades came out a wash either way.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 28 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
They let Peter Woods come to them and pounced at the 38th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Blake Miller in No. 59. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Max Iheanachor in the 69th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Jadarian Price in pick No. 106, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steal is underselling it; Germie Bernard at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Genesis Smith in pick 170 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nick Barrett at Round 7, Pick 27 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
