Somebody in the 143rd overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Texans sat still while Colton Hood, the No. 24 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will need Bowry to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.28
· Pick 28
· Kayden McDonald
· DT
· rank 18
In the Round 1 slot they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Olaivavega Ioane
· OG
· rank 19
Olaivavega Ioane is a better player than No. 34 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.6
· Pick 38
· Caleb Banks
· DL
· rank 42
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Caleb Banks. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Anthony Hill Jr.
· LB
· rank 38
They barely believed it either: Anthony Hill Jr. still on the board at Round 3, Pick 3. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.5
· Pick 69
· Mike Washington Jr.
· RB
· rank 72
Mike Washington Jr. in slot 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.4
· Pick 104
· Logan Jones
· C
· rank 97
Fair-plus on Logan Jones, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.14
· Pick 114
· Jude Bowry
· OT
· rank 130
They paid a round early for Jude Bowry in pick 114, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
R4.17
· Pick 117
· Nicholas Singleton
· RB
· rank 112
A tidy little value on Nicholas Singleton in pick No. 117, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.1
· Pick 141
· J.C. Davis
· OT
· rank 140
They paid sticker price for J.C. Davis in No. 141, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.3
· Pick 143
· Colton Hood
· CB
· rank 24
Taking Colton Hood in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R5.27
· Pick 167
· Caleb Douglas
· WR
· rank 166
No drama and no debate, Caleb Douglas went about where he belonged in slot 167. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.38
· Pick 178
· Taylen Green
· QB
· rank 191
Taylen Green at the 178th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.27
· Pick 243
· Dallen Bentley
· TE
· rank 205
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Dallen Bentley in the 243rd pick, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
