For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Texans walked out of the weekend still thin at edge rusher, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

The Dixon value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The cost of the Claiborne reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.28 · Pick 28 · Olaivavega Ioane · OG · rank 19
In No. 28 they get a blindside protector, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Caleb Banks · DL · rank 42
No edge and no loss on Caleb Banks in pick 38; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Max Iheanachor · OT · rank 47
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Max Iheanachor. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Jacob Rodriguez · LB · rank 52
Jacob Rodriguez at Round 2, Pick 27 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. It fills a real need, too.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 58
They read the board right and Jake Slaughter was the payoff at the 69th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Jonah Coleman · RB · rank 93
Jonah Coleman in the Round 4 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.1 · Pick 141 · Oscar Delp · TE · rank 133
Oscar Delp at pick No. 141 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.15 · Pick 155 · Demond Claiborne · RB · rank 164
A reach for Demond Claiborne in slot 155; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.27 · Pick 167 · Caleb Douglas · WR · rank 166
Caleb Douglas at the 167th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.13 · Pick 229 · Zavion Thomas · WR · rank 234
Zavion Thomas in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.27 · Pick 243 · Thaddeus Dixon · CB · rank 228
The board had Thaddeus Dixon higher than Round 7, Pick 27, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
