Houston Texans

No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Texans.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Texans spent slot 171 on Patrick Payton, a name most had 77 spots down the list. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

That Slaughter pick is the receipt they will wave around later. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Sonny Styles · LB · rank 21
In the Round 1 slot they get the heartbeat of the defense at a price that makes it sweeter.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Emmanuel Pregnon · OG · rank 39
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Emmanuel Pregnon. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Caleb Banks · DL · rank 41
Caleb Banks at pick No. 59 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Eli Stowers · TE · rank 53
Value with a capital V on Eli Stowers in slot 69, a genuine coup. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 55
Steal is underselling it; Jake Slaughter at No. 95 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Jadarian Price · RB · rank 69
Taking Jadarian Price in Round 4, Pick 6 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Trey Zuhn III · OT · rank 125
Trey Zuhn III at Round 4, Pick 25 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
R5.1 · Pick 141 · CJ Daniels · WR · rank 143
No edge and no loss on CJ Daniels in the 141st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.8 · Pick 148 · Kaytron Allen · RB · rank 147
They took Kaytron Allen at par in pick 148, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.27 · Pick 167 · Ar'maj Reed-Adams · OG · rank 171
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at slot 167 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Patrick Payton · DE-EDGE · rank 248
Patrick Payton at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.27 · Pick 243 · Hykeem Williams · WR · rank 280
They reached a country mile for Hykeem Williams at pick No. 243, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
