Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Giants spent pick 70 on Drew Shelton, a name the board had a full 30 spots lower.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Bell falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 6 they get a featured back. A clean fit for the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dillon Thieneman at the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, Drew Shelton in pick No. 70 is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tidy bit of business in the 105th pick, where Sam Hecht graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Skyler Bell in the 107th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and Parker Brailsford was the payoff at pick 145. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A slide stopped in the 186th overall pick, with Eric Rivers worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board had Aamil Wagner higher than the 192nd pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Aaron Anderson is a better player than Round 6, Pick 12 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let TJ Hall come to them and pounced at pick No. 248. The roster fit checks out.
