The Steelers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Beau Stephens at pick No. 99 regardless, 60 picks early. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Stukes at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 21 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Zachariah Branch at par in slot 60, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Eli Stowers in pick 76, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value with a capital V on Domonique Orange in Round 3, Pick 28, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A big swing on Beau Stephens at pick No. 99, well ahead of any board in the building. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Treydan Stukes in the 121st pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Davison Igbinosun at pick No. 135 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kaytron Allen at No. 161 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy bit of business in the 177th overall pick, where Kevin Coleman Jr. graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Sawyer Robertson in pick 216 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tyren Montgomery slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing TJ Hall in Round 7, Pick 14. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Eli Heidenreich at the 237th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Fair-plus on Andre Fuller, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
