There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Jasheen Davis, 77 picks ahead of schedule.
That Monangai pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get a long-term starter on the line, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 16 they get a wrecking ball inside, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Jalon Walker in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A tidy little value on Tate Ratledge in No. 38, a step better than break-even. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A safety of that caliber at the 77th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Savion Williams in the 104th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cam Skattebo in Round 5, Pick 6 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A wild overpay on Jasheen Davis in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kyle Monangai at slot 220 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Seth McLaughlin reach the 238th overall pick and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
