Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Jaden Hicks, the No. 187 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 6 slot. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The cost of the Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Taliese Fuaga · OT · rank 25
In pick No. 23 they get a long-term starter on the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Jared Verse · DE-EDGE · rank 22
Jared Verse slipping to the 36th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 43
By-the-book stuff, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at No. 39 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.1 · Pick 65 · Sedrick Van Pran · C · rank 66
No drama and no debate, Sedrick Van Pran went about where he belonged in slot 65. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Caelen Carson · CB · rank 72
A straight-up fair deal on Caelen Carson at the 71st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 103
Graham Barton is a better player than Round 4, Pick 13 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 138
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joe Milton III. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · Devontez Walker · WR · rank 152
They paid a round early for Devontez Walker in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.19 · Pick 194 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 170
Gabriel Murphy in the 194th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.43 · Pick 218 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 187
The board fumbled Jaden Hicks all the way to pick No. 218, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 241
Theo Johnson at No. 228 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
