Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
They will need Van Pran to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Landing Jones that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
They went early on Patrick Paul in the Round 2 slot, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Sedrick Van Pran at pick 68 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Matt Goncalves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at par in the 139th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jared Wiley at slot 182 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Myles Jones at No. 224 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
