The trade table was a mismatch, and the Packers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.
The Hicks pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
The Packers indulged a want in Bishop while a need in edge rusher, running back and other spots stayed open. Getting Melton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
A conviction pick on Edgerrin Cooper at pick 41 that the board grades a round light. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A real head-scratcher, Jaden Hicks in the 58th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Michael Hall Jr. in the 88th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A quiet steal in pick No. 91: Max Melton for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, running back and other spots still to address, they spent slot 110 on Cole Bishop, a safety they were not short of.
They paid sticker price for Sataoa Laumea in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid a round early for Tip Reiman in No. 169, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Joe Milton III in slot 202; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
