Call it larceny. Jalen Berger sat on the board until slot 226, and the Chargers did not need to be asked twice. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end at fair value. A real need, handled.
Chop Robinson at pick 37 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Caelen Carson at No. 69, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Blake Fisher in the 105th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Fair-plus on Kamal Hadden, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Michael Barrett at par in pick No. 183, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They barely believed it either: Jalen Berger still on the board at Round 7, Pick 6. It fills a real need, too.
