You can draft well and still miss the point. The Chiefs did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to tight end, which was the need that mattered most.
Getting Wright where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They will need Wingo to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 31 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Ruke Orhorhoro in pick 63 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zak Zinter. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A slide stopped in the 131st pick, with Malik Washington worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Chau Smith-Wade at Round 5, Pick 25, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Jaylen Wright at the Round 5 slot is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
LaDarius Henderson is a better player than No. 175 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They let Christian Jones come to them and pounced at slot 209. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, Derek Wingo a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
