You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chiefs did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A mixed bag that lands at C-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The Leveston pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
They will need Eichenberg to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 23 they get a blindside protector. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Xavier Worthy in pick 64. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Khyree Jackson in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No drama and no debate, Brenden Rice went about where he belonged in No. 95. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Johnny Wilson in pick No. 122 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid up for Tommy Eichenberg at Round 4, Pick 31 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
They did well to land Brennan Jackson in the 158th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
A clean, defensible pick in the 172nd pick with a little surplus value in Luke McCaffrey. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
KT Leveston slid further than he should have, and pick No. 252 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
