Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs bled value on every deal, hence the C.

The Chiefs did not so much draft C.J. Hanson as overpay for him, 64 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. However the rest shakes out, Whittington at that price is a win they earned. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.

In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.12 · Pick 44 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 47
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Worthy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.20 · Pick 52 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 55
Christian Haynes at slot 52 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 58
T.J. Tampa in pick No. 58 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 138
Isaac Guerendo in the 124th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 137
A reach for Jared Wiley in pick 125; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 143
Xavier Thomas in the Round 4 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
R5.18 · Pick 154 · Mason McCormick · OT · rank 152
No edge and no loss on Mason McCormick in slot 154; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 179
Kamal Hadden at the 159th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Jordan Travis · QB · rank 181
They paid a round early for Jordan Travis in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
R7.1 · Pick 221 · C.J. Hanson · OG · rank 285
C.J. Hanson at No. 221 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.39 · Pick 257 · Jordan Whittington · WR · rank 236
They robbed the room for Jordan Whittington here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
