There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chiefs started one anyway for Will Sheppard, 53 picks ahead of schedule. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Ferguson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Booker. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 64 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They will replay Omarion Hampton at the 66th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Demetrius Knight Jr. in slot 96 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Kyren Lacy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: Terrance Ferguson still on the board at the 167th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nazir Stackhouse at No. 176 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on Will Sheppard at slot 256, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
