Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Jacob Rodriguez at the Round 1 slot is 40 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Hood pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and edge rusher still on the board.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.9
· Pick 9
· Mansoor Delane
· CB
· rank 8
In No. 9 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
R1.24
· Pick 24
· Colton Hood
· CB
· rank 26
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 24 on Colton Hood with quarterback and edge rusher unsolved.
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Jordyn Tyson
· WR
· rank 23
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordyn Tyson. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R1.29
· Pick 29
· Sonny Styles
· LB
· rank 20
In pick 29 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, outstanding value to boot.
R1.32
· Pick 32
· Jacob Rodriguez
· LB
· rank 72
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a three-down second-level presence, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Eli Stowers
· TE
· rank 53
Eli Stowers in the 40th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.10
· Pick 74
· Domonique Orange
· DT
· rank 74
They paid sticker price for Domonique Orange in No. 74, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.9
· Pick 109
· Will Lee III
· CB
· rank 124
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Will Lee III adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback and edge rusher untouched.
R5.8
· Pick 148
· Kaytron Allen
· RB
· rank 147
A straight-up fair deal on Kaytron Allen at the 148th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
R5.29
· Pick 169
· Ar'maj Reed-Adams
· OG
· rank 171
Ar'maj Reed-Adams in pick 169 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.36
· Pick 176
· Febechi Nwaiwu
· OG
· rank 175
No edge and no loss on Febechi Nwaiwu in pick No. 176; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.29
· Pick 210
· TJ Hall
· CB
· rank 222
TJ Hall at the 210th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
