When a board-topper like Mason McCormick slides to pick No. 173, you do not overthink it, and the Chiefs did not.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They will need Briggs to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kingsley Suamataia at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Caelen Carson went about where he belonged in the 95th overall pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Mohamed Kamara at the 132nd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Jacob Cowing slid further than he should have, and pick No. 159 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Mason McCormick at pick 173 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jowon Briggs at Round 7, Pick 32 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
