You can draft well and still miss the point. The Chiefs did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to tight end, which was the need that mattered most.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Cowing. The Jefferson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Good price on Kingsley Suamataia in the 64th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Caelen Carson at pick No. 95 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Isaac Guerendo at Round 4, Pick 32 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A slide stopped in No. 159, with Jacob Cowing worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid up for Jordan Jefferson at pick 173 when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reach for Solomon Byrd in slot 252; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
