Somebody in pick No. 109 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chiefs sat still while Elijah Sarratt, the No. 77 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Prysock reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get an every-down engine for the run game, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
The board had Jermod McCoy higher than slot 29, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Dillon Thieneman at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They read the board right and Germie Bernard was the payoff at pick No. 74. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Domonique Orange is a better player than pick 92 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Elijah Sarratt at Round 4, Pick 9 for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They jumped the gun on Domani Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Ephesians Prysock at the 169th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Marlin Klein at Round 5, Pick 34 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 176 with a little surplus value in Aamil Wagner. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach on Kaden Wetjen in slot 210; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
