Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Drew Allar got past him. The Cardinals do not have to explain a thing at Round 5, Pick 8. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
If Gray pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 8 they get a disruptive interior force. A real need, handled.
They went early on Maxwell Hairston in No. 40, and the value did not follow. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Garrett Nussmeier in pick No. 72. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Joshua Gray in the 104th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let a quarterback like Drew Allar reach Round 5, Pick 8 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Julian Fleming at the 168th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jack Kiser at slot 200 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
