The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Domonique Orange, pick No. 112, roughly 39 picks past where he belonged. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will need Boettcher to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
The Chiefs indulged a want in Cisse while a need in offensive lineman, quarterback and other spots stayed open. The offensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 28 they get a press-man option on the boundary at a price that makes it sweeter.
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a wrecking ball inside, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
They let Dillon Thieneman come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 41 on Brandon Cisse with offensive lineman, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Malachi Fields slipping to the 92nd overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A slide stopped in pick No. 109, with Bryce Lance worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Domonique Orange was still sitting there in the 112th pick, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Bryce Boettcher at slot 148 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ephesians Prysock. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Eli Raridon at pick 176 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kaelon Black in No. 210 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Thaddeus Dixon in the Round 7 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
