The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Ollie Gordon II, the No. 168 name on the board, in pick 219.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The veteran additions, Josh Downs chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Shemar Stewart and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 14 they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board fumbled Nick Emmanwori all the way to the 38th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 77 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ozzy Trapilo at Round 4, Pick 4 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value with a capital V on Darius Alexander in the 145th pick, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Ollie Gordon II at slot 219 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Circle this one: Upton Stout at No. 222 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Luke Lachey at the 240th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
