You can draft well and still miss the point. The Cowboys did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to quarterback, which was the need that mattered most. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They are betting Barrett proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a potential shutdown corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylen Wright. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had Michael Hall Jr. higher than pick 87, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 174 with a little surplus value in Walter Rouse. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Trey Taylor in the Round 6 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They reached into another round for Michael Barrett, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A slide stopped in the 244th pick, with Bub Means worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
