After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.
They will need Wright to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Wilson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, J.J. McCarthy and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd overall pick they get the face of the franchise, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took Byron Murphy II at par in the 43rd pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They read the board right and Roman Wilson was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 32. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Khyree Jackson in No. 108. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Matt Goncalves at pick No. 109 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Jaylen Wright at pick 130, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Cedric Johnson went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Chau Smith-Wade at slot 160 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Layden Robinson at slot 166 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on AJ Barner. A need, and now a little less of one.
