Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: B.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Vikings' quarterback, full stop.

Landing Mustapha that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Reaching for McCarthy left real value on the table behind him. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
In the 25th overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.19 · Pick 51 · Brandon Dorlus · DE-EDGE · rank 57
Brandon Dorlus in slot 51 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · T'Vondre Sweat · DL · rank 60
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 19 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 82
Good price on Roman Wilson in No. 87, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Ray Davis · RB · rank 109
Ray Davis at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Max Melton · CB · rank 111
Max Melton at the 130th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 163
Layden Robinson in pick 148 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.24 · Pick 160 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 136
Malik Mustapha in the Round 5 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · LaDarius Henderson · OT · rank 159
LaDarius Henderson at Round 5, Pick 30 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Trey Knox · TE · rank 176
Trey Knox at slot 179 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 193
Nice patience on Jordan Magee, who had no business lasting to No. 203. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Steele Chambers · LB · rank 222
Steele Chambers in the 230th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
